Bangladesh Agrees to Purchase Additional Boeing Aircraft Following High-Level Deal Between Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and President Trump

Bangladesh has agreed to purchase additional aircraft from Boeing under a new commercial arrangement, marking a significant expansion of the national flag carrier’s fleet. The development was confirmed on Sunday by Sergio Gor, the United States Special Envoy for South and Central Asia and Ambassador to India, through a post on the social media platform X.
Gor stated that an “unprecedented agreement” had been reached this week between U.S. President Donald Trump and Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tareq Rahman. While the specific number of additional aircraft involved in the latest commitment was not disclosed, Gor noted that the deal entails a multibillion-dollar investment by Dhaka to increase its procurement orders from the U.S. aerospace manufacturer.
Diplomatic sources indicate that the expansion follows an agreement finalized in April for the purchase of 14 Boeing aircraft, valued at approximately 3.7 billion U.S. dollars. That initial order includes eight Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners, two 787-9 Dreamliners, and four 737-8 MAX jets. Under the current timeline, deliveries for these initial units are expected to commence in November 2031, with the remainder arriving by October 2035.
The discussions regarding further procurement gained momentum in late August, following a high-level dialogue between the two nations. Sheikh Bashiruddin, who oversees the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, had previously initiated efforts to modernize the fleet of Biman Bangladesh Airlines. During negotiations regarding a bilateral trade agreement aimed at reducing the trade deficit, authorities proposed the acquisition of 25 aircraft in total, providing Bangladesh the flexibility to modernize its aviation infrastructure through 2037 without requiring immediate lump-sum payments.
The latest agreement reflects a broader strategic effort to strengthen economic and commercial ties between the United States and Bangladesh. Following a visit to Dhaka on July 30, during which he held talks with Prime Minister Rahman, Ambassador Gor emphasized the significant potential for enhanced partnership and cooperation between the two countries. The commitment to purchase additional Boeing aircraft serves as a cornerstone of this evolving bilateral commercial relationship.
