Explosion at Madaripur Mosque Residence Sparks Public Concern as Police Detain Four

MADARIPUR — An explosion tore through a residential structure in Madaripur’s Sadar Upazila on Tuesday, blowing out the corrugated tin walls of the building. Authorities confirmed that no casualties were reported in the incident, which occurred in the Hogolpatia area of Jhaudi Union.
The residence belongs to Akash Hawladar, the Imam of the local Al-Aqsa Akon Bari Jame Mosque, who is currently in Dhaka for medical treatment. According to police and local sources, keys to the residence were held by three individuals, including the mosque’s Muezzin, Md. Alauddin Olil Akon. The blast occurred late Tuesday afternoon, drawing a crowd of concerned residents to the mosque premises. Officers from the Sadar Model Police Station arrived shortly after to secure the site and collect forensic evidence.
This incident marks the third explosion reported in Madaripur within the last 17 days, heightening public anxiety. Previous incidents include a blast at an abandoned house in the South Jhikorhathi area of Ghotmaji Union on August 26, and a cocktail explosion at a girls’ madrasa in the Kalkini municipal area on August 15, which left five children injured. The frequency of these events—targeting religious institutions, educational facilities, and private dwellings—has prompted calls from residents for a thorough investigation into whether extremist elements are involved.
Police have detained four individuals for questioning in connection with Tuesday’s blast. Fariha Rafiq Bhabna, Additional Superintendent of Police for the Sadar Circle, confirmed that forensic teams recovered remnants of an explosive device from the porch of the Imam’s residence.
Addressing concerns over the rising number of blasts, Bhabna noted that the region has a historical trend of individuals manufacturing cocktail bombs to settle social disputes, exert dominance, or resolve personal conflicts. She characterized the recent explosions as isolated incidents stemming from local rivalry rather than organized extremism, emphasizing that police investigations are ongoing to determine the specific circumstances surrounding each case.
