Hospital Patient Recovers Stolen Gold Chains After Thief Swallows Them in Noakhali

A woman seeking medical treatment at the Noakhali 250-bed General Hospital on Tuesday had her gold jewelry stolen by a group of thieves, only for the items to be recovered from the suspect’s stomach via medical intervention.
The victim, Bibi Fatema, a resident of Dadpur Union in Noakhali Sadar Upazila, was standing in a queue at the hospital’s outpatient department when the incident occurred. According to witnesses and hospital authorities, a group of individuals surrounded Fatema and began jostling her. During the commotion, two gold chains weighing a total of one bhori were snatched from her neck.
Fatema raised an alarm as soon as she realized the jewelry was missing. While three members of the suspected criminal ring managed to flee the scene, onlookers detained a 50-year-old woman identified as Sinara Begum, a resident of Sylhet.
Initial searches of Sinara Begum’s person and belongings by bystanders proved fruitless, yielding no sign of the stolen chains. However, the suspect’s indifferent demeanor prompted witnesses to suspect that she had hidden the jewelry internally. Hospital staff transported her to the radiology department, where an X-ray revealed the two chains lodged inside her stomach.
The suspect was subsequently taken to the nearby Ibn Sina Hospital. Under the supervision of physician Rezaul Islam Patwary, medical staff performed an endoscopy and successfully retrieved the chains from her abdomen.
Officers from the Sudharam Model Police Station arrived at the hospital shortly after the recovery to take the suspect into custody. Inspector Idrisur Rahman, in charge of the investigation, confirmed that the police have secured the accused. He stated that formal legal proceedings will commence once the victim’s family files a written complaint.
