Cabinet approves new national pay scale for government employees

The Cabinet on Monday approved a new pay structure for government employees, a move aimed at addressing the financial strain caused by a long-standing stagnation in salary increments. The decision was finalized during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Tareq Rahman at the Secretariat.

Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Goni announced the details of the pay revision during a press briefing at the Press Information Department. He expressed optimism that the formal notification regarding the new structure would be issued within the current week. The formal issuance of the Statutory Regulatory Order (SRO) remains subject to vetting by the Ministry of Law.

Addressing reporters, the Cabinet Secretary noted that public sector salaries had not seen an adjustment in 12 years. He emphasized that given the standard practice of revising pay scales every five years, the extended delay had significantly impacted the living standards of government personnel.

Goni stated that the government recognized the hardships faced by employees due to the lack of incremental adjustments. He affirmed that the new structure was designed to strike a necessary balance, taking into account both the fiscal capacity of the state and the essential needs of the workforce.
