Faridpur youth fined by court following public outcry over controversial social media video with sister

FARIDPUR — A 20-year-old man from Faridpur Sadar Upazila was detained and subsequently fined by a local court after a video featuring him and his five-year-old sister sparked widespread public outrage on social media.
The incident began on Friday when a 20-second video of the man behaving inappropriately toward his sister was posted to his TikTok account. The footage quickly went viral, garnering more than 1.6 million views before Facebook authorities removed it due to numerous complaints.
Following the backlash, the man appeared in a 51-minute live stream on his Facebook page on Saturday afternoon. During the broadcast, he appeared agitated, using abusive language against his critics and the public while suggesting that social norms had become overly restrictive.
Faridpur Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Mahmudul Hasan confirmed that the suspect was taken into custody from his residence at approximately 11:00 p.m. on Saturday. Sub-Inspector Hiramon Biswas, who led the arrest, stated that while the individuals in the video are siblings and the footage did not contain explicit sexual content, the nature of the interaction was deemed highly offensive to public sensibilities.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Ajmir Hossain stated that the man was charged under Section 290 of the Penal Code for causing a public nuisance. He was produced before a court on Sunday, where he paid a fine of 200 BDT and was subsequently released into the custody of his father.
The suspect’s father expressed embarrassment over the incident, claiming he was unaware of his son’s social media activities until the police arrived at their home. He later told reporters that the matter had been resolved following the payment of the fine.
The incident has drawn sharp criticism from local community leaders regarding the behavior of youth on digital platforms. Awlad Hossain, president of the Faridpur Nagarik Mancha, described the trend of seeking overnight internet fame as a systemic issue. He noted that the video was a reflection of moral instability and emphasized that coordinated efforts are needed to guide the younger generation toward healthier social conduct.
