Man critically injured after falling from coconut tree during alleged theft in Barguna

A man is in critical condition after falling from a coconut tree while allegedly attempting to steal fruit in Barguna. The incident, which left the man immobilized and exposed to the elements overnight, occurred in the Kharakanda area of the Barguna municipality.

The individual, identified as Dabir Hossain, reportedly climbed a tree owned by a local resident named Belal Mia on Friday night. Authorities stated that while Hossain was cutting down coconuts, he accidentally disturbed a hornet’s nest. The resulting swarm attacked him, causing him to lose his balance and fall from the tree.

Hossain suffered severe spinal, waist, and hand injuries during the fall. Unable to move, he remained trapped at the base of the tree until Saturday morning. At dawn, he called out to the property owner, Belal Mia, for assistance. Upon discovering Hossain lying on the ground alongside the harvested coconuts, Mia notified the police.

Police officers from the Barguna Sadar station arrived at the scene and transported the injured man to Barguna General Hospital. Dr. Ashfaqur Rahman, a physician at the hospital’s emergency department, reported that Hossain’s condition was grave. Due to the severity of his spinal injuries, he was subsequently transferred to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal for advanced medical care.

Abu Sahadat Md. Hasnain Parvez, officer-in-charge of the Barguna Sadar police station, confirmed that the man had been handed over to his relatives following his initial emergency treatment. Police officials stated that they are investigating the incident and will take legal action if a formal complaint is filed regarding the theft.
