Five children drown in branch of Padma River in Chapainawabganj

Five children drowned on Friday while bathing in a tributary of the Padma River in Charchakla village, located in the Debinagar Union of Chapainawabganj Sadar Upazila. The incident occurred at approximately 1:00 p.m.
The victims have been identified as 10-year-old Sumaiya and 8-year-old Ariba, both daughters of Masud; 12-year-old Sumaiya and 9-year-old Suraiya, both daughters of Nizamuddin; and 12-year-old Sharifa, the daughter of Shariful. All the children were residents of Charchakla village.
Abdul Halim Hamad, a Rajshahi University student and local resident, stated that the children had gone to the river to bathe during Friday noon prayers without notifying anyone. Their absence was only realized after they failed to return, leading to a search that resulted in the recovery of their bodies from the water.
The waterway, a branch of the Padma River, is locally known as the “Mora Nodi” or dead river. Typically dry for much of the year—with the riverbed often used for farming—the area had recently filled with water due to rainfall and rising levels in the main Padma River.
The deaths have cast a pall of mourning over the village, where family members gathered in distress following the tragedy.
Ekaramul Hossain, officer-in-charge of the Chapainawabganj Sadar Police Station, confirmed the fatalities. He stated that local authorities had been dispatched to the scene to conduct an investigation and gather further details regarding the circumstances of the incident.
