Measles Outbreak Claims Five More Lives in Bangladesh as Total Death Toll Reaches 955

Five people have died from symptoms associated with measles in the last 24 hours, health officials reported on Thursday. The latest figures from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) bring the total death toll since March 15 to 955, including 856 deaths attributed to measles-like symptoms and 99 confirmed fatalities from the disease.

According to the report, the five recent deaths occurred between 8:00 a.m. Wednesday and 8:00 a.m. Thursday. Three of these victims were from the Dhaka division, while the remaining two were from the Sylhet division. There were no confirmed deaths from measles reported in the last 24 hours.

Health authorities recorded 956 new cases exhibiting measles symptoms within the last day, bringing the cumulative number of such cases since mid-March to 153,692. Meanwhile, 75 new cases of confirmed measles were identified, pushing the total count of laboratory-confirmed infections to 18,726 since the outbreak began on March 15.

Data from the DGHS indicates that 134,437 patients have been hospitalized with measles symptoms during this period, with 129,489 of those individuals having recovered and been discharged.

While the government’s statistical reporting does not categorize victims by age, epidemiologists have noted that while measles can affect individuals of any age, children remain the most vulnerable demographic. Health officials maintain that all deaths occurring with measles-like symptoms during the current outbreak are being classified as measles-related fatalities.
