Police arrest two suspects in connection with murder of Mymensingh customs official

Police have arrested two men in connection with the murder of Abu Rayhan Talukdar, a customs official whose dismembered body was discovered in Mymensingh’s Fulbaria upazila last month. The suspects were apprehended early Wednesday in Srimangal, Moulvibazar, following an extensive investigation.

The accused have been identified as 19-year-old Raju Mirza, who served as a caretaker for the victim’s residence, and his associate, 20-year-old Sohel Mirza, alias Jitul. Both men are residents of Anantapur village in Fulbaria.

Authorities identified the suspects after reviewing CCTV footage. Following their arrest, police recovered evidence including a knife, a machete, iron rods, logs, and blood-stained pillowcases reportedly used in the crime.

Rayhan Talukdar, 40, a sepoy with the Customs security branch in Kamalapur, Dhaka, went missing on August 2. Nine days later, his remains were recovered from an abandoned pond behind his residence. The body had been severed into 15 pieces and concealed within three travel bags wrapped in a bedsheet.

The victim’s elder brother, Nurul Islam, filed a murder case on August 4, alleging that the suspects killed Rayhan out of greed to seize his money and property. According to the complaint, the murder was premeditated and intended to ensure the victim’s assets could be stolen.

Sub-Inspector Shubra Saha of Fulbaria Police Station, the investigating officer, stated that the suspects had attempted to evade capture by destroying their mobile phones and severing all contact. Law enforcement tracked the pair to a hotel in Sylhet via surveillance footage before tracing them to the Srimangal railway station area, where they were eventually taken into custody.

Family members maintain that the victim, known for his charitable nature, was targeted specifically for his financial stability and accumulated wealth. The investigation remains ongoing as police prepare to bring the suspects to trial.
