Elderly mother files complaint against sons for eviction following fatal property dispute in Jashore

JESSORE, Bangladesh — A 70-year-old mother in Keshabpur Upazila has filed a formal complaint with local authorities, alleging that her two sons evicted her from their family home following a violent property dispute that erupted even as their father’s body lay unburied.
The conflict in Sannyasgacha village began early Monday morning after the death of 75-year-old Khalek Man. His sons, 52-year-old Mahabubur Rahman and 42-year-old Asabul, engaged in a physical altercation over inheritance claims. The fight left both brothers and their wives injured, necessitating their admission to the local Upazila Health Complex. Mahabubur Rahman subsequently filed a complaint with the Keshabpur police station.
Following their discharge from the hospital, Asabul and his wife, Halima Khatun, allegedly evicted the widow, Nurjahan Begum, from the family residence. She has since sought shelter at the home of her daughter, Taslima, in Byasdanga village. Taslima stated that she intends to care for her mother, noting that her brothers have abandoned their parental responsibilities.
In her written complaint submitted Wednesday to the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), Nurjahan Begum accused her sons and daughters-in-law of neglect, verbal abuse, and denying her the right to perform her late husband’s burial rites. She is seeking legal intervention to address the mistreatment and ensure her basic support.
When reporters visited the Sannyasgacha property on Wednesday, Asabul was unavailable, and his mobile phone was disconnected. His son, Al Amin, claimed that his parents were away and suggested that his grandmother often leaves the home of her own volition, promising that she would eventually be brought back.
Mahabubur Rahman, speaking from the hospital, attempted to shift the burden of care, arguing that both brothers should share the responsibility for their mother. When pressed on whether he would take her in if his brother refused, Mahabubur stated he would assume the responsibility.
Keshabpur UNO Anwar Hossain confirmed receipt of the complaint and pledged to provide legal support to the elderly woman. Local authorities are expected to initiate a formal inquiry into the allegations of abuse and neglect.
