Fraud-hit HSC candidates from Abdulpur Government College sit for deferred Bengali exam in Rajshahi

Eight students from Abdulpur Government College in Natore’s Lalpur, who were previously denied entry to their Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations due to a fraudulent registration scheme, sat for their first Bengali paper on Monday. The examination was held under special arrangements at the Rajshahi New Government Degree College center at 10:00 a.m.

The development was confirmed by Professor Shamim Ara Chowdhury, chairman of the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Rajshahi. The board organized these special sittings for a total of 46 students from various districts who had missed earlier exams—covering subjects including Bengali, physics, and logic—due to administrative and technical hurdles.

The affected students, including Israt Jahan Suchi, Sabuj Ahmed, Shimul Sheikh, Akibul Islam, Tanvir Hossain, Shimul Ali, Sabbir Hossain, and Shaon, had originally missed the start of the exams on July 3 after an office assistant at their college, Amit Kumar Sarkar, failed to process their registration forms despite collecting 3,500 taka from each student. The scandal prompted an investigation following media reports, leading to intervention by the Ministry of Education to ensure the students were granted admit cards for their remaining exams.

While the students were able to join the exam cycle late, uncertainty remained regarding the missed first paper. Following further media coverage earlier this month, the education board facilitated Monday’s special session.

Despite the resolution, the logistical burden on the students remains significant. Imamul Haque, father of student Israt Jahan Suchi, noted that the family has had to secure accommodation with relatives in Rajshahi, located approximately 60 kilometers from their home, to ensure the student can attend the examinations. Professor Iffat Jerin, controller of examinations for the Rajshahi board, stated that the center was chosen for its proximity to the board office to minimize travel difficulties for the displaced students.

Acting Principal of Abdulpur Government College, Md. Mamdudur Rahman, confirmed that the college has submitted a report to the Director General of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education requesting departmental action against the accused office assistant. Criminal proceedings against Sarkar are currently pending in court, though a final administrative decision has yet to be reached.
