Bangladeshi Marine Engineer Missing Following Cargo Ship Sinking Off Odisha Coast

A Bangladeshi marine engineer remains missing following the sinking of the Panama-flagged cargo vessel MV Ocean Winner in the Bay of Bengal near the Odisha coast of India. The vessel, which was transporting iron ore from Paradip Port to Singapore, sank approximately 240 nautical miles from the port on Saturday.

According to the Indian Coast Guard, as reported by international news agencies, the vessel carried a crew of 24, including 20 Chinese nationals, three from Myanmar, and one from Bangladesh. Identified as Abdullah Al Mamun, the missing Bangladeshi engineer hails from the Sadar Upazila of Satkhira district.

Rescue efforts are currently underway, led by a joint operation involving the Indian Coast Guard and the Indian Navy. While two survivors have been recovered, the fate of the remaining crew members remains uncertain. Official authorities have yet to provide Mamun’s family with definitive information regarding his whereabouts or status.

Abdullah Al Baki, the brother of the missing engineer, stated that the family has received no updates since they were first informed of the incident on Saturday afternoon. Attempts to obtain information through the foreign recruitment agency that facilitated Mamun’s employment have also proven unsuccessful, as the firm reports no specific details regarding the crew’s condition.

The exact cause of the sinking has not been determined. According to reports from the Indian media outlet The Hindu, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre lost communication with the vessel at 11:48 a.m. on Saturday. In response, a nearby commercial ship, MT Isopos, was diverted to the site and recovered two survivors by 8:00 p.m.

The Indian Coast Guard subsequently deployed patrol vessels, including the Varad, Anmol, and Vijit, to bolster the search-and-rescue mission.

Mamun’s family, struggling with the lack of official information, expressed severe distress. His relatives noted that Mamun, who joined the MV Ocean Winner in late April, last spoke with his family on Thursday night before the vessel departed from the Odisha coast. A close friend, Sadat Al Kabiju, is currently coordinating with the recruitment agency on behalf of the family, but continues to face a lack of updates from the company.
