Three injured as masked gunmen open fire and detonate explosives at Noakhali market

Three people, including a school teacher, sustained injuries after a group of masked gunmen opened fire and detonated crude bombs at a marketplace in the Begumganj Upazila of Noakhali district late Wednesday night.

The incident occurred at approximately 10:00 p.m. at Bangla Bazar in the Jirtali Union. According to witnesses, a group of 10 to 12 masked assailants entered the area from the eastern lane and moved toward the Noakhali-Lakshmipur highway while launching multiple explosive devices.

The victims have been identified as Rajibuzzaman, 56, an assistant headmaster at a local high school, and two shop employees, 17-year-old Md. Sakib and 18-year-old Mohammad Nazim Uddin. All three suffered injuries from shotgun pellets.

Local businessman Saiful Islam reported that the attackers detonated several bombs near his storefront before firing indiscriminately and fleeing the scene. Relatives of the school teacher stated that Rajibuzzaman sustained pellet wounds to his back, chest, and arms and is currently receiving medical care at home.

Sakib and Nazim were admitted to the Noakhali 250-bed General Hospital early Thursday morning. Dr. Rajib Uddin Chowdhury, the hospital’s resident medical officer, confirmed the pair arrived for treatment at approximately 1:00 a.m.

Begumganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Shamsuzzaman confirmed that law enforcement officials inspected the site following the attack. Police are currently working to identify the suspects involved in the violence. Authorities stated that further legal action will be initiated upon the receipt of a formal complaint and following interviews with the victims.
