Traditional boat race in Sylhet Beani Bazar to proceed as scheduled following local dispute resolution

A traditional boat race scheduled for this coming Friday in the Sonai River, located in the Bianibazar Upazila of Sylhet, will proceed as planned following a successful mediation effort. The decision was finalized during a meeting held late Wednesday night to resolve disputes regarding the event.
The boat race is being organized by the youth communities of Lauta and Bahadurpur villages within the Lauta Union. The event faced uncertainty over the past week after a group operating under the banner of Tauhidi Janata voiced opposition to the festivities, utilizing social media platforms to call for a cancellation and staging local demonstrations.
Public criticism emerged following media reports regarding the efforts to halt the event. In response to the growing tension, the Bianibazar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), Umme Habiba Majumdar, tasked the chairman of Lauta Union, Delwar Hossain, with resolving the impasse.
Chairman Delwar Hossain presided over a meeting at the Baraigram Bazar, where representatives from both the organizing committee and the opposing faction were present. Following a consensus reached by all parties involved, it was decided that the boat race would take place as originally scheduled.
Confirming the resolution, Delwar Hossain stated that the grievances had been addressed through a formal dialogue, ensuring that both sides reached an agreement to allow the cultural event to proceed.
