Dhaka North City Corporation launches special cleanliness week in Mohakhali region

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan inaugurated a special cleanliness week for Zone-3 in the Mohakhali area of the capital on Saturday morning. The initiative is part of a broader, city-wide campaign aimed at fostering community engagement to improve urban waste management.

The campaign follows a seminar held in July titled “Urban Waste Management is My, Your, and Everyone’s Responsibility,” which sought to encourage residents to play an active role in maintaining the city’s hygiene. Following the seminar, the DNCC launched a series of cleanliness weeks across its ten administrative zones, with the program officially commencing in Zone-1 on August 8.

During the inauguration, Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan emphasized that while DNCC sanitation workers perform daily maintenance, the sheer scale and population density of Dhaka North make it difficult for the city corporation to manage waste entirely on its own. He urged residents to assist the municipality by disposing of waste responsibly and keeping their own homes and immediate surroundings clean. He specifically highlighted the need to discard the habit of littering tissues and other refuse in public spaces.

Commodore Humayun Kabir, Chief Waste Management Officer of DNCC, explained that the city is actively collaborating with local housing societies, welfare associations, educational institutions, market committees, and community leaders to ensure the campaign’s success. By involving these stakeholders, the corporation aims to create a ripple effect where individuals take responsibility for monitoring and maintaining cleanliness in their specific localities.

As part of the outreach in Zone-3, transportation leaders at the Mohakhali Inter-District Bus Terminal were also involved to ensure the cleanliness of the terminal and its surrounding areas.

The event began with an awareness-raising procession. Attendees included Assistant Private Secretary-2 to the Prime Minister Abdur Rahman Sani, DNCC Secretary Mohammad Asaduzzaman, as well as various regional executive officers and other senior officials.
