Court grants four-day remand for five suspects in Dhaka murder case of Shuraiya Akter Falani

A Dhaka court on Saturday granted a four-day remand for five individuals arrested in connection with the murder of nineteen-year-old Shuraiya Akter, also known as Falani, in the capital’s Sabujbagh area.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Monjurul Islam issued the order following a hearing on the investigation officer’s request. Earlier, the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Nure Alam Siddiki of Sabujbagh Police Station, had requested a ten-day remand to facilitate the ongoing investigation.
The arrested suspects have been identified as Nusrat Jahan Sahida, 19, Faruk, alias Jamai Faruk, 45, Md. Sujon, 20, Md. Mamun, 20, and Md. Rafi Islam, alias Bappi, 19.
The case originated on August 6, when police received reports of human remains—specifically a severed head and hands wrapped in plastic—found under a bridge near a cattle farm in the Baganbari culvert area of Sabujbagh. Law enforcement recovered the remains, and investigators later used information technology to identify the victim as Shuraiya Akter. Her parents confirmed her identity after inspecting photographs of the remains and tattoos on the hands.
According to case documents, investigators established that on the night of August 3, the victim had been seen at the Baganbari culvert with the suspects and other unidentified individuals. Evidence suggests the victim was then lured to an undisclosed location. Further analysis of surveillance footage indicated that, with the exception of the victim and suspect Faruk, the remaining group returned to the culvert area shortly after midnight on August 4 before dispersing.
Sabujbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge Saiful Islam confirmed that the five suspects were apprehended in various locations within the Sabujbagh area on Friday. Police identified the individuals through a review of video footage.
Investigating officers stated that they requested the remand to further interrogate the suspects, identify any additional accomplices involved in the crime, and determine their locations. The case was originally filed by Sub-Inspector Rashedul Islam on August 6 following the discovery of the remains. Investigation into the incident remains active.
