Following the death, police arrested the suspect, 40-year-old Mehedi Hasan, alias Shapla, late Friday night. He was taken into custody after the victim’s brother, Bashir Uddin, filed a case at the Kalai Police Station under the Prevention of Cruelty to Women and Children Act.

The victim, Masuda Begum, had been married to Mehedi Hasan for approximately 20 years. The couple, who share a 12-year-old daughter, resided in Harunja Shahapara village. Masuda was originally from Dashra village in the neighboring Khetlal Upazila.

According to the case records and local residents, Masuda had faced persistent physical and mental abuse throughout their marriage as her husband demanded dowry payments. Her brother stated that the conflict escalated when Mehedi Hasan pressured his wife to sell a plot of land she had inherited. Although the family reportedly gave him 100,000 taka, he continued to demand an additional 500,000 taka.

The complaint alleges that on the morning of August 14, Mehedi Hasan bound Masuda’s hands and feet and played loud music to conceal her cries. He allegedly used pliers to strike her, knocking out two teeth, and subsequently used a heated sickle to burn her hands and feet.

After the assault, the suspect allegedly locked Masuda inside their home. Local residents eventually discovered her in critical condition and transported her to Joypurhat General Hospital. She was later transferred to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura for advanced treatment, where she succumbed to her injuries after seven days.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kalai Police Station, Rafiqul Islam, confirmed the arrest and stated that the case has been formally registered under the legal provisions for the prevention of violence against women and children. The victim’s family is currently seeking justice for the alleged murder.
