The body of a three-year-old girl, Sidratul Muntaha Ayat, was recovered from a pond in Feni’s Sonagazi upazila on Friday morning, 17 hours after she went missing. The discovery occurred at the Mozaffar residence in Madhya Char Chandia village under Char Chandia union.

The child, daughter of Sheikh Shahab Sajib, had been reported missing since Thursday afternoon. According to family members and local authorities, Ayat’s father is an expatriate, and the child resided with her mother at her maternal grandparents’ house. The paternal and maternal homes are within walking distance of each other.

On Thursday morning, the child accompanied her maternal grandmother to her paternal home. When she could not be located later that afternoon, relatives initiated a search, which included casting nets in the pond, but initially yielded no results. A formal missing person report was filed with the Sonagazi Model Police Station on Thursday evening.

The child’s body was spotted floating in the pond by her paternal aunts on Friday morning. Despite being rushed to the Sonagazi Upazila Health Complex, she was declared dead by the attending physician.

The incident has sparked tensions between the families, who are cousins by relation and have been embroiled in a long-standing domestic dispute for several years. Following the disappearance, the child’s paternal grandfather filed a police report, while the mother subsequently submitted a written complaint against three individuals, including the child’s paternal grandmother.

Mohammad Abul Hashim, Officer-in-Charge of Sonagazi Model Police Station, confirmed that a case of unnatural death has been registered. The body has been transferred to the morgue at Feni 250-bed General Hospital for an autopsy to determine the official cause of death.
