WaterAid South Asia Regional Director Khairul Islam dies at 67

Dr. Khairul Islam, the South Asia Regional Director for the international organization WaterAid, has passed away at the age of 67. He died early Friday morning at the Continental Hospital in Dhaka, formerly known as United Hospital.

Plabon Gangopadhyay, a communications coordinator for WaterAid, confirmed the death. According to organization officials, Dr. Islam suffered a cardiac arrest on Thursday night and was subsequently rushed to the hospital, where he succumbed to his condition hours later.

Dr. Islam, an alumnus of Sir Salimullah Medical College, held postgraduate degrees from the National Institute of Preventive and Social Medicine (NIPSM) and institutions in Boston. A distinguished researcher and author, he contributed significantly to public health literature both domestically and internationally. He was a member of the editorial board and a contributor to the book “Bikash of Bangladesh’s Health Sector,” published by Prothoma Prokashan. Furthermore, he contributed to health-sector corruption studies published by Oxford University Press and served as a contributor for “Mujibpedia.”

In collaboration with noted author Shahaduzzaman, Dr. Islam co-authored “The Medical History of the Liberation War,” which was published in 2022 following five years of rigorous research. Throughout his career, he was a vocal advocate for the advancement of water and sanitation sectors in Bangladesh and frequently authored columns on public health and social issues for various publications.

Dr. Islam, who graduated from Mirzapur Cadet College, was scheduled to retire from his position at WaterAid this month.

Hasin Jahan, the country head of WaterAid Bangladesh, stated via social media that Dr. Islam’s body would be kept at the BIRDEM Hospital mortuary. The remains will be held there until his son, who resides abroad, returns to the country.
