Folk Musician Mujib Paradeshi Sent to Prison Following New Check Dishonor Case

DHAKA — Folk singer and music director Mujib Pardeshi has been formally arrested in connection with a fresh cheque dishonour case. A Dhaka court ordered him to be sent to jail following a hearing on Tuesday.
Judge Md. Sadiq Ahmed of the Fifth Joint Metropolitan Sessions Court of Dhaka issued the order. Bench assistant Shah Alam Mia confirmed the development to reporters following the proceedings.
Pardeshi was produced before the court from prison on Tuesday morning. When asked by journalists for comment regarding the case, the artist declined to speak, stating only that he had nothing to say and that the legal action was acceptable.
The case dates back to 2003, when the plaintiff, Mujibur Rahman, alleged that Pardeshi accepted 440,000 taka under the pretext of arranging for his brother, Md. Solaiman Sardar, to travel to England. According to the case documents, half of the amount was paid via bank transfer and the remainder in cash.
When the singer failed to facilitate the travel, the plaintiff demanded a refund. Pardeshi allegedly issued two cheques for 220,000 taka each; however, both were dishonoured by the bank due to insufficient funds. Despite multiple legal notices, the debt remained unpaid. The plaintiff filed the case under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act on June 1, 2004. The complaint further alleged that Pardeshi had defrauded others by using his celebrity status to promise foreign travel, though no other complainants were named in this specific suit.
This follows a separate legal proceeding in which Pardeshi was sent to jail on August 5 in connection with a different cheque dishonour case involving 1 million taka. That case was filed in 2022 by Idris Ali Biswas in a Magura court. On March 15, 2023, the Second Joint District and Sessions Judge of Magura, Muhammad Anwar Sadat, sentenced Pardeshi to one year of rigorous imprisonment and fined him 1 million taka.
Because Pardeshi had been absconding at the time of the verdict in the Magura case, an arrest warrant was issued against him. He was subsequently taken into custody by the Uttara West Police Station and presented before the court to serve his sentence.
