Fifteen Lawyers Arrested in Chittagong for Allegedly Organizing Pro-Awami League Event

CHITTAGONG — Police in the port city of Chittagong arrested 15 lawyers late Saturday on charges of violating anti-terrorism laws during an alleged political gathering. Authorities claimed the group, comprised of supporters of the banned Awami League, had assembled to commemorate the death anniversary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The arrests took place at a residence in the Mansurabad WAPDA Colony within the Doublemooring police station area. Following their detention, the accused were presented before the Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Sunday. Judge Mohammad Alamgir Hossain granted bail to five female lawyers, while ordering the remaining 10 suspects to be remanded to prison.

The individuals released on bail were identified as Kamela Khanum, Sujala Antara, Sharmina Yasmin, and Ayesha Heaven. The group remaining in custody includes Umme Habiba, the local government affairs secretary of the central executive committee of the banned Krishak League, along with Iskandar Mirza, Shuvo Aich, Sanjay Kanti Nath, SM Salauddin, Ahsan Abid, Sultan Mahmud, Partha Pratim Nandi, Jishu Roy Chowdhury, Mashiur Rahman, and Md Zaker Hossain.

Doublemooring Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahin Alam stated that the operation was launched following a tip-off regarding an unauthorized gathering at the residence of Umme Habiba. According to police reports, the suspects were organizing an event to mark August 15, the anniversary of the 1975 assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Government Prosecutor Raihanul Wajed Chowdhury confirmed the court proceedings, noting that the defense had filed bail petitions for all 15 defendants. The police have registered a formal case against the group under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
