Brother of victim testifies at International Crimes Tribunal in Rampura shooting case

A witness testified before the International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Sunday regarding the death of Mamun Mia, a student killed during the July mass uprising in Dhaka. The victim’s brother, Md. Rubel, provided a formal deposition detailing the events that led to the fatal shooting of his sibling in the Rampura area.
Mamun Mia, a master’s student in political science at Government Titumir College, was living on Omar Ali Lane in the WAPDA Road area at the time of the incident. According to the testimony, Mamun had ventured outside his residence on July 18, 2024, after experiencing a prolonged power and internet outage.
Rubel told the tribunal that he was informed of the shooting around 2:00 a.m. by his nephew, Nirab, who alerted him that Mamun had been wounded and required urgent medical care. Upon arriving at the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital at 5:00 a.m. from his workplace in Gazipur, Rubel discovered his brother in critical condition.
Medical examinations revealed that a bullet had entered the back of Mamun’s head and exited through his left eye. Despite emergency surgery and being placed on life support, Mamun was pronounced dead at 11:30 a.m. on July 19.
Citing information provided by Mamun’s roommate, Parvez, the witness stated that a crowd had gathered at the intersection of Rampura WAPDA Road when several vehicles approached with sirens wailing. As bystanders dispersed, law enforcement personnel, including members of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and police, opened fire. Rubel identified four individuals he holds responsible for his brother’s death: BGB members Redwanul Islam and Rafat-Bin-Alam, and police officers Rashedul Islam and Mashiur Rahman.
The case involves charges of crimes against humanity committed in the Rampura and Bonosree areas of the capital. Two of the accused, former BGB officials Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Redwanul Islam and Major Md. Rafat-Bin-Alam, were present in the courtroom during the proceedings. The remaining two suspects, former Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Md. Rashedul Islam and former Officer-in-Charge Md. Mashiur Rahman, remain at large.
