Three Arrested in Sunamganj for Murder of Elderly Man Orchestrated by Son from Abroad

Police in Dowarabazar, Sunamganj, have arrested three individuals, including a daughter-in-law, in connection with the murder of a 75-year-old man. The suspects allegedly orchestrated the killing over a property dispute, with the victim’s own son reportedly funding the plot from abroad.

The victim, identified as Mohammad Ali, was a resident of Sonapur village in the Narsingpur Union of the upazila. Police identified the arrested suspects as Hosna Begum, 38, and two local men, Ruhul Amin, 22, and Nazrul Islam, 20.

According to Dowarabazar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Tarikul Islam Talukdar, the incident came to light after authorities were alerted to suspicious marks on the victim’s neck and blood around his mouth. Although family members initially attempted to pass off the death as natural, police intervened to stop the burial and transported the body to the Sunamganj District Sadar Hospital for an autopsy.

Under interrogation, Hosna Begum confessed to conspiring with her husband, Ismail Hossain, who currently resides in Saudi Arabia, to kill his father. Investigators learned that the couple had been pressuring Mohammad Ali to transfer his land to them. When he refused and began living independently, the dispute escalated.

Police stated that Ismail provided 50,000 BDT to facilitate the murder. On Friday night, Hosna Begum reportedly allowed the assailants—Ruhul Amin, Nazrul Islam, and a third suspect named Ziaur Rahman—into the house. Using a ladder to access the victim’s room while he slept, the men strangled him with a piece of cloth while Hosna Begum provided assistance by lighting the scene.

Following the discovery of the crime, the victim’s granddaughter, Asma Begum, filed a murder case against five individuals. The three suspects currently in custody have admitted to their roles in the killing. Police have launched an ongoing operation to apprehend the remaining two suspects, including the victim’s son, Ismail Hossain, who remains at large.
