Two Women Detained at Dhanmondi 32 Sent to Jail in Six-Month-Old Anti-Terrorism Case

DHAKA — A Dhaka court on Sunday ordered two young women to be sent to jail after police arrested them in connection with an anti-terrorism case filed six months ago. The women were taken into custody on August 15 while attempting to pay respects at the memorial of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Dhanmondi 32.
The two suspects, identified as 21-year-old Jannatul Ferdous, alias Jannat, and 29-year-old Suma Baral, alias Dolly, were presented before the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain. The court denied their bail petitions and remanded them to prison.
The case dates back to February 26, when police received intelligence regarding a planned anti-government protest. According to the investigation report submitted by Sub-Inspector Abu Solayman Sumon of Dhanmondi Police Station, law enforcement officials intervened on the morning of February 27 near Road 3 in Dhanmondi. Police alleged that approximately 20 to 25 members of the banned organization Mohila Awami League had gathered to march with placards, intending to engage in state-sponsored subversion and propaganda aimed at toppling the government. Several individuals were detained at the scene, while others fled.
Sub-Inspector Abul Bashar Abdullah of the police prosecution department confirmed the legal proceedings. While the two women were initially detained on August 15, they were formally shown arrested in the February terrorism case today.
Defense attorneys Gazi Faisal Islam and Liton Mia represented the accused during the hearing. Following the court’s order, Liton Mia noted that his client, Suma Baral, had not been named in the original First Information Report filed six months ago.
