Bomb scare in Meherpur town resolved as suspicious objects found on utility poles are identified as soundboxes

MEHERPUR — A bomb scare gripped Meherpur town on Saturday morning after residents discovered suspicious objects wrapped in red adhesive tape hanging from utility poles at three different locations.

The objects were found near Meherpur University, the Court Intersection, and in front of Dr. Shahid Samsuzzoha Park. Local authorities later confirmed that the items were not explosives but soundboxes, prompting an investigation into the motive behind the incident.

Panic initially spread when residents observed a box covered in plastic and wrapped in red tape hanging from a pole near the university. The presence of wires and what appeared to be technical components led observers to believe the devices were improvised explosive devices.

Police responded to the scene and, as a precautionary measure, submerged the box in a bucket of water after disconnecting a battery. Upon inspection, they discovered it contained only a soundbox. Shortly thereafter, authorities received reports of similar devices hanging from utility poles at the Court Intersection and near Dr. Shahid Samsuzzoha Park.

Tension escalated further around 9:15 a.m. when the soundbox near the park began playing a speech by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at a high volume, causing renewed alarm among the public. Police quickly recovered the remaining devices and have taken all three into custody.

Humayun Kabir, officer-in-charge of Meherpur Sadar Police Station, urged the public to remain calm, confirming that no explosives were found in any of the recovered items.

“These devices were not bombs or explosive materials. It appears someone placed the soundboxes on the utility poles to spark curiosity or create confusion,” Kabir stated.

Police have launched an investigation to identify the individuals responsible for the incident. Authorities have vowed to track down those involved and ensure they are held accountable under the law.
