Court Sends Jubo League Activist Ornab Das to Jail Over Alleged Terror Plot at Dhanmondi 32

A Dhaka court on Saturday ordered the imprisonment of Ornob Das, 32, following his arrest at the Dhanmondi 32 site in the capital. The arrest occurred as he and others allegedly attempted to pay tribute at the former residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam issued the jail order following a hearing on Saturday afternoon. Sub-Inspector Abul Bashar Abdullah, representing the prosecution division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, confirmed the judicial decision.
Ornob Das was detained at approximately 10:00 a.m. local time. Authorities have identified him as an active member of the Juba League, an organization currently facing a ban. Following the arrest, Sub-Inspector Babon Uddin of Dhanmondi Model Police Station filed a case against the suspect under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
According to the case files, the accused are members of the banned student organization Chhatra League, as well as the Awami League and the Juba League. Police allege that the suspects conspired to commit acts of terrorism by gathering in a procession intended to destabilize the national situation, create public panic, and endanger civilian life.
Investigating Officer Sub-Inspector Md. Ariful Islam requested that the court keep the suspect in custody pending further investigation. In his petition, the officer noted that the accused has provided preliminary information regarding his involvement in the alleged conspiracy, and that verification of his associates and residential details is currently underway. The police argued that releasing the defendant on bail could lead him to flee or engage in further criminal activity.
Police reports indicate that Ornob Das and a group of 100 to 150 individuals had gathered near the site, arriving in white Hiace microbuses to initiate a protest.
During the proceedings, defense lawyer Liton Miah moved for bail, which was strongly opposed by the state counsel. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court rejected the bail petition and ordered the defendant to be remanded to prison. The suspect was held in the courthouse detention cell during the proceedings and was not brought into the main courtroom.
