Highway Police to Launch AI-Powered Automated Fines on Dhaka-Chattogram Highway Starting August 18

The Highway Police are set to implement an artificial intelligence-based enforcement system on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway to enhance road safety, strengthen traffic discipline, and automate penalties for traffic violations. The initiative, dubbed the “Auto Fine System,” marks a significant technological shift in the nation’s highway management.

According to a press statement issued by the Highway Police headquarters on Saturday, the automated system will become fully operational on August 18. The technology will automatically detect and process traffic violations, including speeding, illegal parking, and driving against the flow of traffic.

Under this new framework, advanced AI-powered cameras will identify offending vehicles and automatically register legal cases. Following the detection, vehicle owners will receive notification of the fines via SMS on their registered mobile numbers. Once notified, owners may settle the penalties through designated mobile banking services, such as bKash or Nagad.

The project covers approximately 250 kilometers of the Dhaka-Chittagong highway, monitored by 1,427 newly installed AI cameras. While semi-automated AI traffic systems have previously been deployed in the capital, this project represents the first time a fully automated AI surveillance system has been utilized on a major national highway.

Trial operations for the system are currently underway, with the formal inauguration scheduled to be conducted by Home Affairs Minister Salahuddin Ahmed.

Highway police officials stated that the technology is designed to make the identification of traffic violations, data storage, and the collection of fines more transparent, accurate, and efficient. Authorities anticipate that the implementation will play a critical role in reducing road accidents, fostering greater public awareness regarding traffic regulations, and ensuring long-term order on the highway. The Highway Police have requested the active cooperation of passengers, transport owners, and labor leaders to ensure the success of the initiative.
