Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar Accuses BNP of Hypocrisy Over Referendum Stance

KHULNA — Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar has criticized the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) for its selective approach toward the recent national referendum, labeling the party’s stance as contradictory and hypocritical.

Speaking as the chief guest at a youth conference held at the Liakat Ali Auditorium of the Khulna Press Club on Friday, Parwar argued that the BNP’s rejection of specific reform proposals while supporting the broader referendum results constitutes political duplicity. The conference was organized by the Youth and Sports Division of the Khulna Metropolitan Jamaat-e-Islami to mark International Youth Day 2026.

Parwar asserted that the referendum results cannot be accepted in fragments. He compared the BNP’s selective acceptance to acknowledging only one of two twins, arguing that the public mandate for constitutional reform cannot be partially rejected. He maintained that supporting the referendum signifies an endorsement of all proposed structural changes, which are designed to dismantle the authoritarian framework established under the previous administration.

The Jamaat leader suggested that the BNP’s reluctance to fully embrace the reform proposals stems from a desire to retain the unchecked executive powers inherent in the current constitution. He contended that if the party were to accept the full scope of the reforms—including the rebalancing of power between the Prime Minister and the President—it would undermine their potential for authoritarian governance. He described the “July Charter” as an obstacle to those seeking to maintain traditional, top-down power structures.

Addressing the broader political climate, Parwar called upon the nation’s youth to lead a social resistance against corruption, extortion, and the formation of syndicates at the district, upazila, union, and ward levels. He warned that the persistence of systemic looting and party-based racketeering threatens the objectives of the July uprising.

Furthermore, Parwar criticized the ongoing practice of appointing party loyalists to municipal corporations, district councils, and development authorities, noting that such moves facilitate tender manipulation and misappropriation of public funds. He urged political leaders to honor their commitments to the electorate and emphasized that elected members of parliament must be allowed to manage regional development without interference from external party operatives.

The conference was presided over by Mukarram Ansari, President of the Youth and Sports Division of the Khulna Metropolitan Jamaat, and moderated by Secretary Md. Hamidul Islam Khan. Other notable speakers included central executive committee member and Member of Parliament Abul Kalam Azad, metropolitan Jamaat Amir Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman, Member of Parliament Sheikh Jahangir Hossain Helal, and central committee members Muhammad Yasin Arafat and Md. Rakib Hasan.
