Bodies of three Bangladeshi family members murdered in Rome returned to Noakhali for burial

The bodies of three Bangladeshi nationals—Kamal Uddin Babul, 39, his wife Arju Akter, 38, and their five-year-old daughter, Arowa Islam Arisha—arrived in Dhaka on Friday morning following their fatal stabbing in Rome, Italy. The victims, originally from Companiganj in Noakhali district, were laid to rest at their family graveyard in Char-Kakra Union on Friday evening.
The coffins reached Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at approximately 8:00 a.m. local time. By late afternoon, the remains were transported to the victims’ ancestral home in Ward 5 of Char-Kakra Union, where a funeral prayer service was held at the Shishu Niketan Government Primary School grounds following Maghrib prayers.
The tragedy unfolded on the night of June 26 inside an apartment in the Casalotti area of Rome. Italian police discovered the bodies of the couple and their young daughter after being alerted by neighbors. Their son, Ayan, survived the attack and has since recovered from his injuries. He remains the sole survivor of the immediate family.
Sirajul Islam, the father of Kamal Uddin, struggled to contain his grief as he addressed the mourners. He recalled that his son had recently visited home to renovate the family graveyard, never imagining that he and his family would be buried there so soon. The bereaved father has called for a thorough investigation into the brutal killings.
Family members reported that in July 2023, they had received a threatening letter at their residence in Noakhali from a group identifying themselves as “Lal Bahini,” which demanded money and gold ornaments under threat of murder. While the family filed formal complaints with local police and a nearby military camp at the time, they stated that it remains unclear whether these threats are connected to the murders in Italy.
Italian authorities are currently conducting an investigation into the circumstances of the attack. Following an initial funeral service held in Rome on Tuesday, the bodies were repatriated to Bangladesh to facilitate the final rites.
