Body of missing man recovered from Turag River in Gazipur following gambling scare

GAZIPUR — Police recovered the body of a 45-year-old man from the Turag River on Friday morning, two days after he went missing while fleeing from what he mistakenly believed to be a law enforcement raid.
The deceased was identified as Moazzem Hossain, son of Mohammad Ali from the Khalishabarta area of Gazipur. His body was discovered floating in the Kadda area of the city, according to local authorities.
According to police and local accounts, several groups have allegedly been using trawlers on the Turag River near Kadda, Kaultiya, and Karkhana Bazar to facilitate gambling and drug use. On Wednesday night, Moazzem and four to five other individuals were reportedly gambling on a trawler when an unidentified group approached them. Fearing a police crackdown, the gamblers jumped into the river. While three individuals managed to swim to safety, Moazzem failed to surface.
Delwar Hossain, a cousin of the deceased, alleged that the group was confronted by five to six unidentified men who ordered them to leave the trawler and threatened them with gunfire, prompting the men to jump into the water.
Local residents initiated a search effort on Wednesday night, followed by a professional rescue operation led by divers from the Fire Service throughout Thursday. Those efforts proved unsuccessful until the body surfaced on Friday morning. Police retrieved the remains and transported them to the morgue at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.
Aminul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Gazipur Sadar Police Station, confirmed that no police operations were being conducted in that area on the night of the incident. Authorities suspect the victims were gambling and panicked upon seeing the approaching group, leading to the fatal outcome. Police stated that legal proceedings regarding the incident are currently underway.
