Former Gazipur 5 Lawmaker Akhtaruzzaman Sent to Jail Following Remand in Anti Terrorism Case

A Dhaka court on Thursday ordered former Gazipur-5 lawmaker and former Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) Vice President Akhtaruzzaman to be sent to jail following the conclusion of his three-day remand in a counter-terrorism case.
Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam issued the order after the accused was produced before the court by the investigation officer, Inspector Md. Masudur Rahman of the Detective Branch (DB) Tejgaon Zonal Team. The prosecution had requested that the accused be held in custody pending further investigation.
Defense counsel Morshed Hossain Shahin sought bail for Akhtaruzzaman and filed separate petitions requesting division status and medical treatment while in custody. The lawyer stated that the bail hearing could not proceed as the case records were not available at the court during the proceedings. The magistrate granted the petitions for division status and medical care in accordance with prison regulations.
Akhtaruzzaman was arrested by the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch on the night of August 5 from a residence in the Gulshan area. He was initially sent to jail the following day, and the court subsequently granted a three-day remand on August 10.
The case, filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act, stems from an incident on the morning of June 18 near the Mohakhali Bus Terminal in the Tejgaon Industrial Area. According to the police report, approximately 35 to 40 activists from the Awami League and Chhatra League held a procession during which they allegedly chanted anti-government slogans and detonated crude bombs to incite public panic. Authorities subsequently initiated the case, citing various state-subversive activities.
