Four Shahjalal University Students File Ragging Complaint Against Six Seniors at Off-Campus Residence

Four first-year students at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) have filed a formal complaint with the university proctor, alleging they were subjected to ragging by six senior students. The incident reportedly took place between 12:30 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. last Monday at a private student residence known as Ripon Mess, located near the Syed Mujtaba Ali Hall.

The complainants have been identified as Nasir Uddin of the Oceanography department, Golam Morshed and Shahadat Hossain Sagar of the Industrial and Production Engineering department, and Ziaur Rahman of the Bangla department. All four are first-semester students from the 2025-26 academic session and have been residing at the mess since June.

The accused students are Hassan Goljar Rahman (Bangla, 2018-19 session), Solaiman Kabir (Economics, 2020-21 session), and Sabbir Rahman (Industrial and Production Engineering), Maruf Hassan (Political Studies), and Abu Raihan (Political Studies), all from the 2023-24 session.

According to the victims, the harassment began following a birthday celebration for Abu Raihan held at the residence. Nasir Uddin stated that after the cake-cutting event, the senior students subjected the newcomers to hours of ragging. Ziaur Rahman corroborated the account, noting that the situation escalated from a discussion about residential rules into incidents of mistreatment.

Solaiman Kabir, one of the accused, denied the allegations, characterizing the event as a discussion regarding mess regulations. He claimed that Sabbir Rahman had been teasing his department juniors and that a minor disagreement with Nasir was subsequently resolved amicably at the scene.

University Proctor Mokhlesur Rahman confirmed receipt of the formal complaint. He stated that an emergency meeting of the proctorial body has been convened for Thursday to review the allegations and determine further disciplinary action.
