Teesta Master Plan implementation set for next year as parliamentary committee reviews water resource projects

Implementation of the Teesta Master Plan is scheduled to commence next year, according to a press release issued following a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Water Resources on Thursday.

The committee held its inaugural session at the National Parliament House, where officials reviewed ongoing development activities, project timelines, and budgetary allocations. Discussions focused on river erosion prevention, reforestation initiatives, and the status of the Padma Barrage project, which has already received approval from the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council. Furthermore, the committee reported receiving assurances regarding the renewal of the Farakka Treaty.

The Ministry of Water Resources is currently overseeing 93 development projects, with an allocated budget of 7.83 billion taka for the 2026-2027 fiscal year. The committee emphasized the necessity of completing these projects within designated timeframes, ensuring fiscal transparency, and enhancing the quality of public services. The meeting was presided over by committee chairman Mohammad Shafiqul Haque and attended by Minister of Water Resources Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie, State Minister Farhad Hossain Azad, and committee members AKM Fazlul Haque Milon, AE Sultan Mahmud, Alamgir Muhammad Mahfuz Ullah Farid, Munshi Rafiqul Alam, Md Izzat Ullah, Mashiur Rahman Khan, and Md Oli Ullah.

Separately, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Home Affairs held its first meeting on Thursday afternoon, identifying narcotics and gambling as critical national concerns. The committee called for a coordinated and robust approach to eradicate these issues, highlighting the importance of public awareness campaigns. Ministry officials reported that ongoing efforts include the operation of mobile courts and the establishment of specialized tribunals.

Regarding law enforcement transparency, the committee was informed that the recruitment process for police personnel over the past six months was conducted with absolute neutrality, free from political influence. The meeting was presided over by committee chairman Zainul Abedin and attended by Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmad, along with members Rakibul Islam, Mia Nuruddin Ahammed Apu, Mir Shahe Alam, Kamruzzaman, Monwar Hossain, Shirin Sultana, Nurul Islam, and Abdul Baten.
