Teenage girl dies from snakebite days after passing SSC exams in Pabna

A teenager in Pabna district died of a snakebite on Tuesday night, just two days after celebrating her success in the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations.
The victim, 17-year-old Sonali Akhter, was bitten by a venomous snake while returning home with her mother at around 10:00 p.m. in the remote Char Mirpur village, located in the Dhalarchar Union of Bera Upazila.
Following the bite, the family did not seek immediate medical attention at a hospital. Instead, they took the teenager to a traditional healer in the Bandherhat area. After prolonged attempts to treat her with folk rituals, Sonali lost consciousness. She died while she was being transported to a hospital.
Sonali, who had recently passed her SSC exams with a GPA of 3.56 from Sinthi Pathshala, was the sole focus of her mother’s aspirations. After the death of her father and a sibling, Sonali had moved with her mother, 40-year-old Rasheda Khatun, to her maternal uncle’s home. Rasheda Khatun, who had refused to remarry to focus entirely on her daughter’s upbringing and education, remains inconsolable following the tragedy.
Teachers and classmates described Sonali as a vibrant and multifaceted student who excelled in academics, sports, scouting, and cultural activities. Ariful Islam Sajib, the head teacher of Sinthi Pathshala, said he had spoken with Sonali via telephone as recently as 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday to discuss plans for a school celebration scheduled for Thursday.
The school community and the victim’s family are currently mourning the loss, with her mother expressing profound despair over the sudden death of her only companion and support.
