Suspected robbery gang leader shot and arrested by police in Dhaka Aftabnagar encounter

A 30-year-old man identified as SM Ariful Islam was wounded in a reported exchange of fire with the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police in the Aftabnagar area of Badda on Thursday night. Following the incident, he was taken into police custody and admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.

Inspector Md. Anwar Hossain of the DB’s Gulshan division stated that the operation was launched around 8:45 p.m. after authorities received intelligence that a group of armed robbers was preparing for a heist in the Eastern Housing area of Aftabnagar. According to police, as officers approached the site, Islam attempted to fire at them with a handgun.

In response, officers fired a shotgun round in self-defense, striking Islam below his right knee. Police subsequently apprehended him and seized a pistol along with three rounds of ammunition. Officials confirmed that legal proceedings are underway to file a formal case against him at the Badda Police Station.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) identified Islam, a resident of Goran, as the leader of an organized robbery syndicate. Additional Commissioner of the DB, Md. Shafiqul Islam, noted that the suspect is already facing five pending robbery cases and three outstanding arrest warrants.
