Zero pass rate in SSC exams across three schools in Rangpur triggers local outcry

RANGPUR — Academic performance in the Pirganj and Taraganj Upazilas has faced sharp criticism after three educational institutions recorded a zero percent pass rate in the recent Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations.
In Pirganj, both Kumarpur High School and Ghashipur High School failed to produce a single successful candidate. Kumarpur High School, which maintains a staff of nine teachers and six employees, saw all 18 of its examinees fail. This represents a stark decline from the 2025 examination cycle, where 29 out of 54 students passed. Ghashipur High School similarly reported a total failure, with all 15 of its students failing to pass. In the previous year, the school recorded a pass rate of 55 percent, with 11 out of 20 students succeeding.
The failure of these institutions has sparked local outrage, with residents questioning the quality of instruction, teacher attendance, and overall school management. Critics argue that the zero percent pass rate—particularly at Kumarpur High School, which is fully staffed—suggests systemic negligence rather than isolated student failure.
Headmaster of Ghashipur High School, Mostafizur Rahman, attributed the poor results to the academic weakness of the current student cohort and a critical shortage of staff. Established in 2001 and brought under the government’s Monthly Pay Order (MPO) scheme in 2022, the school currently employs only four MPO-listed teachers. Efforts to reach Kohinoor Begum, the headmaster of Kumarpur High School, were unsuccessful as she declined to comment on the matter.
In a separate incident in Taraganj Upazila, the Bottoli Nomirul Dakhil Madrasa also reported a zero percent pass rate, with all five of its examinees failing despite having a faculty of 14 teachers and three staff members for its 150 students.
Local education officials have responded by promising disciplinary action against the underperforming institutions. Pirganj Secondary Education Officer Abdur Rahim confirmed that the schools in his jurisdiction will be served show-cause notices. Similarly, Taraganj Secondary Education Officer Shahinur Islam stated that legal and administrative measures would be initiated against the madrasa in accordance with established regulations.
Residents continue to demand a thorough investigation into the teaching environment, citing that the failure of these institutions reflects deeper issues regarding pedagogical accountability and classroom supervision.
