High Court Orders Seventh Grade Pay Scale Restoration for 690 Nationalized College Teachers

The High Court has ordered the government to restore the seventh-grade salary scale for 690 teachers working at newly nationalized colleges across the country. The ruling follows the final hearing of a writ petition filed three years ago, which challenged the demotion of these educators to the ninth grade following the nationalization of their respective institutions.
The verdict was delivered on Monday by a High Court bench comprising Justice K.M. Hafizul Alam and Justice Murad-E-Maula Sohel.
The petitioners, who serve as lecturers, argued that they were entitled to the seventh-grade salary scale based on their status prior to their institutions being brought under state control. They contended that their post-nationalization demotion to the ninth grade not only adversely impacted their professional standing but also violated their fundamental rights as guaranteed by the constitution.
Representing the petitioners, lawyer Mohammad Siddiq Ullah Miah—assisted by Mohammad Atiqur Rahman and Mohammad Harunur Rashid—stated that the court’s decision effectively resolves the long-standing salary dispute. Miah noted that this ruling mirrors a similar judgment delivered on July 11, 2024, which favored 45 other lecturers in a separate case.
Describing the ruling as a restoration of justice, Miah expressed hope that the authorities would implement the decision promptly once the full text of the verdict is published.
The state was represented by Deputy Attorney General Mohammad Jamalur Rahim Khan, who stated that the government intends to challenge the High Court’s decision by filing an appeal with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.
