Three students die following Secondary School Certificate exam failure in separate incidents

At least three students died on Monday following the release of Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination results, as incidents of suicide and sudden death were reported across three different districts.

In Rajshahi’s Bagmara Upazila, a female student died while being transported to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital after she was found hanging in her room. Family members and police reported that the student, who sat for the examinations under the science stream, had failed in chemistry and physics. Her father, Kanchan Kumar, expressed shock, stating that his daughter had been a dedicated student. Abdus Sattar, headmaster of the student’s school, noted that only 16 of the 32 candidates from their institution passed this year. Officer-in-Charge of Bagmara Police Station, Touhidul Islam, confirmed that police have arrived at the scene and will register a case of unnatural death.

In Chapainawabganj’s Shibganj, another female science student died after consuming poison upon learning she had failed the English portion of her exams. Dr. Shahrina Islam, a medical officer at the emergency department of the local hospital, confirmed that the girl was dead upon arrival at approximately 2:40 p.m. Shibganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Motiur Rahman confirmed the incident. Reflecting on the tragedy, Shafiul Azam, a senior teacher at Chapainawabganj Government Girls’ High School, criticized the current education and examination management systems, suggesting that impulsive students are becoming victims of systemic flaws and societal pressure.

Separately, in Chandpur’s Shahrasti Upazila, a student from the humanities department died after learning she had failed in two subjects. According to her uncle, Iqbal Hossain, the student became ill after checking her results while she was home alone. Shahrasti Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mir Mahbubur Rahman stated that the student collapsed upon hearing the results and was declared dead after being rushed to the hospital. Police have initially classified the death as natural.
