New civic platform Center for Society and Culture launches in Virginia to promote Bangladeshi state reform and cultural preservation

A new research and civic platform, the Center for Society and Culture (CSC), has officially launched in Woodbridge, Virginia, with the objective of preserving the spirit of the July mass uprising and advocating for state reform. The organization’s debut was marked by an event titled “July 36: Ignited by Resilience, United for the Future,” which brought together members of the Bangladeshi diaspora last Saturday.
In a press release issued on Monday, CSC Director Muna Hafsa confirmed the platform’s formation. The launch was organized in collaboration with several entities, including July House, Band, Save Bangladesh, Sochchar, and The Bengal Council, drawing participation from representatives of the local Bangladeshi community and various expatriate networks.
The event was divided into two segments, consisting of a formal discussion followed by a cultural program. Filmmaker and former interim government advisor Mostofa Sarwar Farooqui, participating via a video message, emphasized the necessity of establishing an inclusive, pro-Bangladesh cultural institution to sustain the ideals of the July movement.
Kazi Wali Ullah, Chairman of July Records, addressed the gathering virtually, asserting that the oral history of the movement must be systematically archived. Faiz Ahmad Taiyab, a former assistant to the Chief Advisor of the interim government, also joined the discussion online, urging for the integration of the expertise and intellect of the Bangladeshi diaspora into national policymaking processes.
Additional speakers included Mim Akter, sister of July uprising martyr Rabbi, and Shafiqul Alam, editor of the Daily Wada, both of whom participated virtually.
The event concluded with remarks from Muna Hafsa and Redwan Hossain Talukdar, a lead member of the CSC. The pair outlined the organization’s future cultural initiatives, which are intended to be implemented both within Bangladesh and on the international stage. The program concluded with a cultural performance dedicated to the memory of the historic student-led mass uprising.
