Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir Criticizes Opposition Rhetoric and Outlines Government Development Strategy in Rangpur

RANGPUR — Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday accused the political opposition of adopting the same confrontational rhetoric previously employed by the ousted Awami League administration.
Speaking as the chief guest at the Rangpur District Shilpakala Academy during a program organized by the U.S.-based charity Love Share BD, the minister criticized opposition groups for utilizing obstructionist language. He noted that despite the current interim government being in office for only four to five months, it has already undertaken significant reform initiatives.
During the event, which featured the inauguration of a self-reliance project for underprivileged individuals and the distribution of 25 tea stalls to beneficiaries, the minister addressed the nation’s ongoing energy challenges. He stated that the state-run gas exploration company, Bapex, had been intentionally incapacitated by the previous regime but has since been reactivated. He added that the government has issued tenders to international firms for gas exploration to alleviate supply shortages.
Addressing the broader fuel crisis, the minister noted that geopolitical tensions between Iran and the United States have resulted in a financial burden of nearly $4 billion for Bangladesh due to payment complexities. Despite these external pressures, he asserted that the government has successfully maintained fuel and gas supplies.
Regarding regional development, the minister outlined plans to establish agricultural industries in the Rangpur and northern regions to boost employment. He urged residents to move beyond localized political affiliations—citing historical shifts between the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, the Jatiya Party, and Jamaat-e-Islami—which he argued have historically hindered the region’s progress.
The minister defended the government’s record on civil liberties, stating that democracy has been restored and the media now operates with complete freedom. However, he cautioned against the proliferation of misinformation on social media platforms.
The event was attended by former Bangladeshi Ambassador to the U.S. and Senior Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mushfiqul Fazal Ansarey, Rangpur Development Authority Chairman Md. Samsuzzaman Samu, Rangpur City Corporation Administrator Saiful Islam, and Love Share BD Director Zahid Khan.
