In Sunamganj, while cutting a dam to protect haor crops, a young man died in a landslide

A young man named Arman Hossain (18) died after he was crushed by soil while cutting a dam to protect the crops of Ghoradoba Haor of Madhyanagar Upazila of Sunamganj. This incident took place in Souldwari crop protection dam project area No. 8 at around 11:30 on Sunday. Arman is the son of farmer Chanfar Ali of Shalyani village in Madhyanagar Sadar Union.
According to the local residents, more than 150 farmers from six surrounding villages gathered in the dam area last Friday around 9 pm to cut some parts of the dam to protect the souldwari crops in the drainage of Ghoradoba Haor. Based on everyone’s opinion, 15 to 20 farmers among them cut some parts of the dam with spades, but the water was not draining that way.
Some eyewitnesses said that around 11 o’clock today, 50 to 70 people including Arman Hossain of Shaliani village again went to the Souldwari crop protection dam area. They were trying to remove the soil from the lower part to drain the water through the cut of the dam. When Arman Hossain tried to remove the soil with a spade, the soil on one side of the embankment collapsed and fell on him. The people with him rescued him unconscious and took him to the emergency department of Dharmapasha Upazila Health Complex, where the doctor declared him dead.
Arman’s uncle Abul Hashem (61) told Prothom Alo that his nephew died due to a mudslide on one side of the dam when he was trying to remove the soil with a spade to drain the water from the crop protection dam. He said, ‘There is no fault in this. All the blame is on us. We have no complaint against anyone about this.
AKM Shahab Uddin Shaheen, officer-in-charge of Madhyanagar police station told Prothom Alo that the incident is very shocking. Heard the news of death. The body is being brought from the hospital to Madhyanagar. If a written complaint is received in this incident, action will be taken according to the rules after investigation.
