BNP Lawmaker Nasir Uddin Chowdhury Predicts Future Merger with Awami League

Sunamganj-2 lawmaker Nasir Uddin Chowdhury has sparked political debate by suggesting that the Awami League and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will soon unite. Speaking as the chief guest at a rally titled “17 Years of Irresistible Struggle for Democracy and the Blood-Stained July Awakening” in Dirai on Thursday, the lawmaker asserted that the Awami League should be viewed as a former ally rather than an enemy, given their shared history in the liberation struggle.
The event, organized by the local units of the BNP, also served as a platform for Nasir Uddin Chowdhury to address deepening fissures within the local party leadership. With reports indicating that his younger brother, উপজেলা (Upazila) BNP joint convener Masuk Chowdhury, has organized a separate rally for this coming Saturday, the 75-year-old lawmaker dismissed the rival gathering. He explicitly warned party workers against attending any event outside of the current rally, characterizing independent initiatives as attempts to fracture the party’s cohesion.
Tensions within the Chowdhury family were laid bare during the address. Declaring that he effectively has no brothers, Nasir Uddin Chowdhury alleged that his political adversaries are using the party’s name to spread misinformation and conceal their own motives. He strongly refuted mounting allegations of financial misconduct against him, challenging his critics to verify official budget allocations through the local administration.
Maintaining a firm stance on governance, the veteran parliamentarian pledged to uphold zero tolerance for corruption as long as he remains in office. The rally, presided over by Upazila BNP convener Amir Hossain, featured speeches from several local party leaders and was attended by Nasir Uddin Chowdhury’s wife, Parvin Chowdhury, as the party attempts to navigate internal disputes while maintaining its political momentum.
