Autorickshaw driver killed in attempted hijacking in Gazipur

A 24-year-old auto-rickshaw driver was fatally stabbed by passengers posing as commuters in Gazipur’s Kaliakoir upazila on Wednesday night. The assailants attempted to steal the victim’s vehicle before fleeing into a nearby forest when local residents were alerted by the driver’s cries for help.
The victim, identified as Md. Suman Mia, resided with his family in a rented home in the Saheb Bazar area. According to police and local accounts, Suman had picked up three passengers from the Chandra bus stand along the Dhaka-Tangail highway at approximately 8:30 p.m.
As the auto-rickshaw reached a secluded area in front of Akhtar Spinning Mill in the Kalampur neighborhood, the passengers attacked the driver with knives. Despite the mortal wounds inflicted on his neck and body, Suman managed to raise an alarm, drawing the attention of nearby residents. Fearing capture, the perpetrators abandoned the vehicle and fled toward a forested area.
Local witnesses rushed the critically wounded driver to the Kaliakoir Upazila Health Complex, where attending physicians declared him dead upon arrival. Business owner Md. Shah Alam, who arrived at the scene shortly after the attack, reported that the attackers had vanished by the time bystanders reached the site.
Police arrived at the scene to collect evidence and secured the auto-rickshaw as part of the investigation. The body was transferred to the morgue at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for an autopsy. Kaliakoir Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahidul Islam confirmed that authorities have launched an operation to identify and apprehend those responsible for the killing.
