Jagannath University Student Leader Injured in Attack Attributed to Pro-BNP Faction

A leader of the Jagannath University Central Student Union (JKS) was hospitalized with a head injury following a targeted attack in Old Dhaka on Wednesday evening. Noor Mohammad, the university’s health and environment secretary and local coordinator for the platform Inqilab Mancha, was assaulted in front of Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College by a group allegedly affiliated with the college’s Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) unit.
Witnesses, including Inqilab Mancha member Rakib Shikdar, reported that the altercation began when members of the student platform gathered near the college to visit a colleague who had been injured in a previous incident. According to the account, a group of 20 to 25 individuals led by Suhrawardy College JCD President Jashim Uddin surrounded the students. The assailants allegedly confirmed Mohammad’s identity via a video call to an unidentified person before initiating the assault.
In addition to Mohammad, who is currently receiving treatment at Dhaka National Medical Institute Hospital, three other Inqilab Mancha members—Ismail Hossain Tanim, Rakib Shikdar, and Alfaz—sustained injuries during the confrontation.
The attack has sparked immediate condemnation from student leaders. Fatima Tasnim Juma, a central member of Inqilab Mancha, publicly identified the JCD as the perpetrators in a social media statement. Meanwhile, JKS General Secretary Abdul Alim issued a stern call for administrative intervention, questioning the conduct of the political organization and warning that failing to bring the attackers to justice could lead to further instability.
Attempts to reach representatives of the Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College unit of the JCD for comment were unsuccessful.
