College student dies in Netrokona after fleeing police patrol

A 19-year-old college student died Tuesday afternoon after falling into a canal in Netrokona while allegedly attempting to flee from a police patrol. The victim, Sabbir Sheikh, a twelfth-grade student at Abu Abbas Degree College, was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Netrokona 250-bed District Hospital.
The incident occurred near the Harikhali canal along the Netrokona-Amtala road. According to police accounts, a nine-member team from the district Detective Branch (DB) was traveling by motorcycle to conduct an anti-narcotics operation when they encountered a group of youths. Upon noticing the officers, the group attempted to run, resulting in several individuals falling into the water. While others managed to swim to safety, Sabbir remained submerged.
Local residents recovered the student from the canal and alerted the officers, who then transported him to the hospital. Dr. Mazharul Amin, the hospital’s resident medical officer, confirmed that the victim was brought in at approximately 4:30 p.m. with his clothes still soaked. A formal autopsy is expected to clarify the precise cause of death.
The victim’s sister, Purnima Akter, expressed shock over the incident, stating that her brother was not involved in any criminal activity and worked regularly at their father’s shop. She maintained that Sabbir did not know how to swim and has demanded a neutral investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
District DB Inspector Debangshu Kumar Deb, who was out of the district for legal testimony at the time, suggested that the police actions did not appear to be at fault based on preliminary information. However, Additional Superintendent of Police Hafizul Islam, speaking on behalf of the district police, stated that an inquiry is underway. Investigators are examining why the group fled, whether they were involved in any illicit activities, and the specific sequence of events that led to the fatal drowning. Efforts to reach Sub-Inspector Rajan Mia, the lead officer on the scene, remained unsuccessful.
