Bangladesh Heightens Nationwide Security Ahead of July Uprising Anniversary

Authorities across Bangladesh have enforced heightened security measures in anticipation of the “July Uprising Day” commemorations, with police and paramilitary forces deploying multi-layered surveillance to prevent potential unrest. The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have mobilized significant personnel, including specialized units, to secure the capital and other key areas throughout the country.
RAB officials stated that the agency has integrated its intelligence networks with local administrations to mitigate security risks. Patrols have been intensified, and specialized teams are monitoring the routes designated for marches and rallies, as well as sites associated with the July commemorative monuments. Beyond traditional uniformed presence, RAB has deployed plainclothes officers and expanded its cyber-patrol operations to counter the spread of disinformation and extremist propaganda on social media.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police has adopted a similar strategy, fortifying the city’s perimeter with additional checkpoints and strategic deployment of its specialized units. According to a statement released by the DMP, elite units—including the SWAT team, bomb disposal squads, and dog squads—have been tasked with securing high-traffic areas and major venues. These locations are being monitored through an extensive network of CCTV cameras and aerial drone surveillance. To ensure a rapid response to emergencies, the police have placed Quick Response Teams on standby throughout the metropolitan area, while senior officers supervise operations directly from the field.
These security precautions follow a nationwide alert issued by Police Headquarters last Saturday regarding potential threats to official government vehicles. The alert was prompted by intelligence reports suggesting that police transport, including jeeps and buses, could be targeted by saboteurs. Units have been instructed to exercise heightened vigilance, secure government assets in protected compounds, and conduct frequent patrols to identify suspicious individuals or objects.
The heightened state of alert comes amid a series of recent security scares in the capital. Over the past month, authorities have responded to multiple reports of suspicious bags and packages left at high-profile locations, including the Motijheel, Mirpur-10, and Farmgate metro stations. Although bomb disposal teams determined that these incidents involved no actual explosives, the recurring nature of these alarms has solidified the decision to maintain a maximum security posture during the commemorative events.
