Railway launches investigation after Silk City Express derailment halts northern rail links

Rail authorities have launched a five-member investigation committee to determine the cause of the derailment involving the Dhaka-bound Silk City Express in Sirajganj, which disrupted rail communications between the capital and the country’s northern and southern regions on Tuesday.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:55 a.m. when the train, traveling from Rajshahi, reached the Shaheed M. Mansur Ali Station. A carriage unexpectedly veered off the tracks, prompting the crew to bring the train to an emergency stop. Railway officials confirmed that while the derailment caused significant operational delays, no major injuries were reported.
According to the Pakshi divisional railway office, the investigation committee is led by Divisional Transport Officer Mosharef Hossain Bhuiyan. The team also includes Divisional Engineer-2 Nazib Kaysar, Divisional Mechanical Engineers Sheikh Asif Ahmed and Rabiul Islam, and Divisional Signal and Telecommunication Engineer Ahmed Ishtiaq Zahur.
The derailment has triggered a major bottleneck across the rail network. Five intercity trains—the Nilsagar Express, Rangpur Express, Ekota Express, Burimari Express, and Chilahati Express—remain stranded at various stations awaiting the restoration of the line.
Divisional Mechanical Engineer Rabiul Islam explained that the incident was caused by the separation of two wheels on one of the train’s carriages, with one wheel dislodging entirely and landing outside the tracks. A relief train arrived at the scene around 2:30 p.m. to begin recovery operations. Officials estimate that clearing the site and restoring standard traffic flow will take approximately three hours, depending on the progress of the salvage work.
