Clashes erupt between student factions at Dhaka University hall over misconduct allegations

Clashes erupted between student activists from the Islami Chhatra Shibir and the Jatiyotabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) at Dhaka University’s Dr. Muhammad Shahidullah Hall on Sunday afternoon. The violence, which broke out within the provost’s office, was sparked by allegations of “homosexual activities” involving two guests staying in the room of the hall’s assistant general secretary, Ibrahim Khalil.
The confrontation occurred while a hall-appointed committee was conducting an inquiry into the allegations. Both student factions have leveled counter-accusations of assault, with each side claiming that several of their members sustained injuries during the fracas.
JCD hall convener Mosaddique Al Haque alleged that Shibir activists were attempting to protect the assistant general secretary by disseminating falsehoods. He further accused the rival group of deleting CCTV footage to obscure evidence of the official’s presence during the alleged incident. According to Haque, the situation escalated when Shibir members created a hostile environment at the provost’s office, leading to an unprovoked attack on JCD members who were present at the scene.
Conversely, Shibir-backed hall general secretary Toukir Hasan blamed the JCD for the violence. Hasan stated that the conflict began when JCD members interrupted the formal inquiry process. He claimed that the situation deteriorated after JCD members accused a Shibir activist of photographing them, which led to a physical assault. Hasan further alleged that the house tutors present during the incident failed to maintain order, calling their conduct into question.
Following the unrest, both factions claimed that the hall provost, Professor Md. Aminul Islam Bhuiyan, had resigned from his position. However, the provost could not be reached for confirmation despite multiple attempts to solicit comment.
Dhaka University Proctor Israfil Ratan confirmed that temporary tensions had gripped the hall and noted that a mobile team of assistant proctors was dispatched to the scene immediately upon receiving the provost’s report. While Ratan stated that the administration managed to mediate the situation, he remained uncertain regarding the alleged resignation of the provost, noting that he had not received official word on the matter. Investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
