Man arrested in Bangladesh after fatal petrol attack on ex-wife

A 25-year-old woman in Dinajpur’s Biral upazila was killed Saturday night after her former husband allegedly doused her in petrol and set her ablaze. The incident occurred in Sutarpara village, reportedly because the victim, Sumaiya Akhter, refused her former husband’s demands to reconcile their marriage.
The accused, 50-year-old construction worker Mahabubur Rahman, was taken into custody shortly after the attack. Police recovered a petrol bottle and a sharp knife from the scene, which have been secured as evidence.
According to Sumaiya’s uncle, Sajjadur Rahman, the couple had been married for some time before divorcing two months ago due to frequent physical and mental abuse. Following the separation, Sumaiya, who had a six-year-old son and a three-year-old daughter with the suspect, moved in with her relatives. Family members stated that Mahabubur had been persistently pressuring the victim to resume their life together and had issued several threats when she refused.
Witnesses from the neighborhood reported that Mahabubur arrived at the victim’s home at approximately 10:30 p.m. and attempted to force her to leave with him. Following a brief struggle, he allegedly poured petrol over Sumaiya and ignited it. Local residents rushed to the scene upon hearing the woman’s screams and managed to extinguish the flames before transporting her to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital. She was later referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment but succumbed to her injuries while en route.
Additional Superintendent of Police for the Sadar Circle, Abdul Halim, confirmed that a murder case is currently being filed. The victim’s body has been sent to the morgue for an autopsy, and authorities have pledged a thorough investigation to ensure legal action is taken against the suspect.
