Gopalganj Schoolgirl Attempts Suicide After Public Torture Video Goes Viral

A 13-year-old schoolgirl in the Kashiani sub-district of Gopalganj has been hospitalized after attempting suicide, following the viral spread of a video showing her and a young man being subjected to public abuse. The incident, which took place on the grounds of a local secondary school, has ignited widespread public outrage and condemnation from parents and community members.

According to reports, the girl, an eighth-grade student, and the young man were forcibly brought to the school premises on July 28 after local residents allegedly observed them in a compromising situation the previous day. Once at the school, the pair were tied to a Devdaru tree using cloth and subjected to prolonged physical and mental abuse in the presence of onlookers, including students and members of the community. Several individuals recorded the ordeal, and the footage began circulating on Facebook this past Friday.

The family of the victim claims that the humiliation caused by the video’s dissemination drove the teenager to consume poison. She was initially treated at a local sub-health center, but due to her deteriorating condition, she was subsequently transferred to the Gopalganj 250-bed General Hospital, where she remains under medical care.

Local residents have criticized school authorities for failing to take action in the three days following the incident. Nayan Baroi, Joy Sikdar, and Mission Roy have been identified as primary suspects in the assault. While acknowledging that he had intercepted the pair and brought them to the school to be turned over to their guardians, Nayan Baroi denied any involvement in the physical abuse or the act of tying the victims to the tree.

The school’s principal, Indrajit Sarkar, stated that he was not present on campus at the time of the incident but confirmed he has since been informed of the situation. He indicated that formal measures would be discussed upon the return of the school management committee’s president from Dhaka.

Law enforcement officials in Kashiani have confirmed that no formal complaint has been filed as of yet. Officer-in-Charge Muhammad Mahfuzur Rahman stated that once a complaint is received, police will launch a formal investigation to pursue legal action against those responsible.
